Have Yourself A Very Sandi Christmas

I swear this isn’t just a Sandi Patty fan-cover site—more diverse music will be uploaded! But in the meantime, a friend asked if I would record one of her Christmas songs, and I realized I’d never actually been asked to record a Sandi Patty song before. How could I possibly refuse?

As I looked back through the other Christmas albums I’ve recorded over the years, I discovered quite a few more Sandi songs tucked away. I pulled them out, refreshed a few, and gathered them together here.

Liner notes are below. Thank you so much for listening!

Liner NOtes

Angels We Have Heard On High – From Sandi’s 1996 Christmas album O Holy Night, this track is loud, joyful, and delightfully bombastic. It’s a rollicking, exuberant way to open the collection, with a choir behind her that’s clearly having just as much fun as she is.

I Wonder As I Wander – From 1983’s The Gift Goes On. You’ll notice a joyful collision of ’90s pomp and ’80s schmaltz throughout this collection—and I couldn’t be happier about it. This performance feels like a clear nod to Barbra’s iconic 1967 recording, with Sandi paying homage while still making the song unmistakably her own.

I’ll Be Home For The Holidays – A medley of “There’s No Place Like Home for the Holidays” and “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” though that title is far too long for my liking. Taken from her 1996 album, this track is sweet, subtle, and gently evocative of childhood Christmases, warm kitchens, and familiar voices.

Christmas Was Meant For Children – From 1983. I generally steer clear of songs about children, but the idea that Christmas is a season when we all become children again speaks directly to my whimsical heart. The lyrics paint an idyllic, Rockwellian vision of Christmas that’s hard not to fall into.

Carol Of The Bells – From 1996, and once again loud, grand, and symphonic. The men’s choir behind her is nearly Russian in its intensity, driving the piece forward with thrilling force. It’s a fantastic arrangement that doesn’t hold back.

Merry Christmas With Love – Easily the most aggressively ’80s track in this collection, and I can’t help but adore it. I took a few liberties here—adding some modulations and a higher melody line on the repeat. As I get older, this song speaks to me in a quietly melancholy way that only deepens its charm.

Bethlehem Morning – This is the song Jay (of Omar & Jay) specifically asked me to record—and honestly, how have I not done this yet? A classic Sandi anthem, it builds steadily to a deeply satisfying finale. I may have added a dramatic pause after the high note. I am a ham, after all.

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas – Short, sweet, and taken from her 1983 album. It’s one of the three songs in this collection that begin a cappella. I especially love the strings here.

And that’s it. If you ever get the chance to track down these two Sandi albums, I can’t recommend them highly enough. I do not have the pipes for it, but do yourself a favor and listen to her “Worship the King Reprise / Celebrate the Gift” to hear her take on the Hallelujah Chorus. It’s nothing short of amazing.

Merry Christmas, friends!

Much Love, Chris
